EARRING WIRE

Wire which enters through ear piercing and from which any other part of the earring decoration hangs or is displayed.

CLIP

Earrings designed for non-pierced ears. The clip-back works as a hinge to secure the earring to the earlobe. These types of earrings clip onto the lobe of the ear.

POST

Also known as stud earrings. These earrings give the appearance of floating on the ear or earlobe without a visible point of connection. Studs are constructed on the end of a post, which penetrates straight through the ear. The post is held in place by a removable friction back also known as a clutch.

CHANDELIER

Earrings which have a drop suspended like a chandelier, sometimes on multiple levels, dangling parts often give the earrings movement. This type of earring often features tiers of stones.

BUTTON

Earrings which resemble buttons; lying flat on the ear with no dangling parts.

CLUSTER

Decorative earrings made up of a cluster of glass and/or metal beads, pearls, stones, diamonds or other materials.

CHAIN

Fine metal chains used to encircle the neck, wrists and/or ankles, they serve as points to hang decorative charms and pendants. Typically made from precious metals, mainly gold and silver; platinum, palladium and steel may also be used. These metals are used because they are not very reactive, keep both their intricate shape and strength, and require only minimal maintenance to keep their shine.

ROPE

A series of small oval-shaped links that are arranged in such a way that they make a spiral design resembling a woven rope.

LEATHER

Skin of any animal, with the hair removed prepared for use by tanning or a similar process designed to preserve it against decay and make it pliable or supple when dry. Used in necklaces, bracelets, cuff bracelets, rings and earrings.

CHARM

A small ornament, such as worn on a bracelet, earring, necklace or ring; a charm usually hangs off of a chain or base fixture.

HUGGY

This type of earring is worn in pierced ears. A hinge is located at the top of the earring that allows the post to open and close without an earring back. The setting actually "hugs" the earlobe, thus the name. many custom jewelers make huggy earrings because of the many varieties of setting that can be used to make a good template. Stones are often channel set in huggy earrings.

PENDANT

A hanging ornament which hangs off of an earring or as a main piece suspended from a necklace.

CLASP

A connection which opens and closes two ends of a piece of jewelry. For necklaces and bracelets, a clasp is used to secure the jewelry to your person.

COCKTAIL RING

Also refered to as a Dinner Ring, is a large over-sized ring, set with precious or semiprecious stones. Cocktail rings became popular during the 1940's and 1950's. This type of ring is dramatic enough to be worn to a cocktail party. May either be fine or costume jewelry, often worn on either the index or middle finger.

STUDS

A Type of pierced earring that has a solitaire stone or metal bead on a post that is inserted through the piercing.

BANGLE

A rigid, ring-shaped bracelet usually made without a clasp so as to slip over the hand, but sometimes having a hinged opening and a clasp.

BROOCH

A decorative, ornamental pin with a hinged pin and catch, worn fastened to clothing.

CUFF

A wide or narrow "C" shaped bracelet, hugs 3 quarters of the wrist, leaving a thin opening for putting on and taking off.

HINGED BRACELET

Often in bangle or cuff form, bracelet which opens and closes via a hinge on the bottom or side of the bracelet. Often have invisible and magnetic opening at the top which holds bracelet closed around the wrist.

RING

A circular band worn as a type of ornamental jewellry around the finger. A ring can be made of almost any material: metal, plastic, wood, bone, glass or gemstones. May be set with precious or semiprecious stones.

WRAP NECKLACE

Extremely Long necklace, usually over 33 inches long, which can be wrapped 2 to 3 times around the neck or worn as a single long strand. A particularly popular example this is a long strand of pearls.

MULTI STRAND

A Necklace which is composed of multiple strands which drape around the neck. Can also refer to a bracelet with multiple strands.

LONG NECKLACE

Necklace over 24" long, can be left worn as single strand or can be draped and doubled or even tripled up depending on the length of the strand.

COLLAR NECKLACE

12-13 inches. Necklace which sits tightly around the neck, and lays similar to the collar on a dress shirt.

TOGGLE CLASP

2 piece clasps that are attached to opposite ends of a piece of jewelry. One section of the clasp is formed into a circle or other shape with an open center. Other half is a thick bar that attaches to the components at the other end. It is held in place when you insert the "T" into the circular piece.

BEZEL SET

Precious metal disc used to encircle the girdle of a gem stone, or the edge of a coin, holding it in place securely on the ring.

MOSAIC

A piece which is formed by uniting pieces of different colors; composed of various materials, metals, stones, or gemstones. Can also be strictly surface decoration made by inlaying in patterns of small pieces of variously colored glass, stone or other materials.
