Rapaport - The Perennial Pearl

The Perennial Pearl

As fresh interpretations of this classic gem continue to emerge, pearls remain a favorite among fashion-forward jewelry collectors. Their enduring appeal is reinforced not only by evolving design aesthetics, but also by their sustainability and resilient pricing.

Pearls have long held a revered place in jewelry history, famously worn by international nobility and modern cultural icons alike. From Michelle Obama to the Clintons, pearls have symbolized elegance for generations. Today, however, pearls are undergoing a notable transformation. Once dismissed by some as outdated, they are now embraced by younger consumers and worn by male celebrities including actor Dave Bautista and Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, signaling a broader cultural shift.

“Pearl jewelry is truly having a global moment,” says Michael Hakimian, CEO of pearl-focused brand Yoko London, noting strong demand across North America, Asia, and the Middle East—each region interpreting pearls in its own contemporary way.

Despite economic volatility, the pearl market has shown remarkable resilience. Rising costs driven by reduced production in Japan and increased demand from China have pushed prices up significantly—by as much as 100% in some categories over the past three years. Still, demand remains steady. At Marissa Collections, buyer and lead fine-jewelry curator Jennifer Meyer attributes this balance to pearls’ lasting desirability and the growing interest in reimagining existing heirloom pieces with a modern edge.

Beyond aesthetics, pearls resonate with today’s consumer for ethical reasons as well. As the only truly sustainable gemstone, pearls are farmed rather than mined and actively contribute to cleaner water as filter feeders. Farmers play a direct role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, with higher environmental care directly linked to higher-quality pearls.

Design evolution has also propelled pearls into the modern fashion conversation. From runway visibility at houses like Simone Rocha and Alexander McQueen to innovative contemporary silhouettes, pearls are being redefined for a new generation seeking individuality and craftsmanship.

Once considered traditional, pearls are now firmly positioned as a modern essential—reimagined, responsibly sourced, and continuously evolving for the future of fine jewelry.
