Styling a Fierce Woman: Happy 115th Birthday Amelia Earhart!

According to today’s Google homepage, today is Amelia Earhart’s 115th birthday. Happy birthday you crazy fierce woman!

How can you not love a woman who knew exactly what she wanted and went after it with blind ambition? (And she had impeccable taste in style!)

It’s very sad that she and her navigator, Fred Noonan never made their goal of being the first woman to circumnavigate the globe (their plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean and has yet to be found – 75 years later).

It would surprise many that Amelia actually never had any interest in flying, her resolve to have her life revolve around flying was when pilot Frank Hawks took her for a ride on December 28th, 1920 that changed her mind and life forever. (source)

Earhart had an almost blinding drive to fly. She challenged prejudice and financial obstacles, defied conventional feminine behavior and kept a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about successful women in predominantly male-oriented fields. (source)

Amelia Earhart is known to be the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and also the first woman to cross it solo, 5 years to the day, after Charles Lindbergh made his crossing.

She was awarded a gold medal from the National Geographic Society, Distinguished Flying Cross (first ever to be given to a woman!) and Vice President Charles Curtis praised her courage.

Earhart felt the flight “proved that men and women were equal in ‘jobs requiring intelligence, coordination, speed, coolness, and willpower.’” (source)
